Abstract
A spectrophotometric study of the reaction between thorium ion and β-hydronaphthazarin disulphonate (dipotassium 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-5,8-dihydroxy-1,4-diketonaphthalene-2,6-disulphonic acid) in aqueous solution showed that two water-soluble complexes were formed, a green complex with a metal to ligand ratio of 1:1 and a blue complex with a metal to ligand ratio of 2:1. The green complex with an absorption maximum at 460 mμ was formed with β-hydronaphthazarin disulphonate, while the blue complex with absorption maxima at 570 and 610 mμ was formed with napthazarin disulphonate. A study of the related thorium-β-hydronapthazarin system indicated that complex formation does not occur unless conditions were such that the ligand was oxidized to naphthazarin.
