Abstract Binary asteroids have long been suspected to exist, yet only one has been definitively discovered, and that was by space-based observations. None have been detected by ground observations. During 1982-84, 57 asteroids were observed a total of 179 times at the KPNO 4 m telescope by speckle interferometry. No companions were detected. Upper limits to the linear size of an unseen companion are given, along with upper and lower limits to the linear separation of the unseen companion.
