Abstract

A classification problem in the domain of insect identification is discussed and desirable features of a database which enhances template matching are outlined. The entities in the database are represented as vectors of numeric values, and include a Fourier coefficient vector for each entity. The database is organized as a link-weighted network, in which links are established so that all triangle inequalities are satisfied, and geodetic distances are preserved. This organization contributes to an efficient search method (based upon the A* algorithm) for the template matching of an unknown inscct to those represented in the database. Problems associated with the implementation, the search strategy, and objectives are discussed.
