Abstract

A special class of pulsed beam preparation systems is discussed with respect to the realization of high time as well as high momentum resolution. These systems are especially suited to rf-accelerators such as the isochronous cyclotrons and linacs used in low and medium energy nuclear and heavy ion physics. The ionoptical components have static magnetic fields; no rf-active bunching elements are incorporated. The structure of the proposed beam preparation systems can be classified as telescopical and mirror-symmetrical. As a consequence of this structure most of the second-order aberrations are equal to zero. The first- and second-order properties are discussed. Examples of the realization of such beam preparation systems are given.
