Abstract

AbstractPublic security is a matter of constant concern among populations, public managers, and urban planners. Although rising crime rates may lead to a feeling of insecurity in an affected community, research in this area has not yet converged on a consensus regarding this perception. The present study aims to compare the official records of crime occurrences registered by the police around a university campus (the University of São Paulo in São Carlos, Brazil) with the academic community’s security perception. This comparison is made with maps built using ordinary kriging. We utilized data on crime occurrences and online questionnaires both collected in 2016. Our findings indicated divergences between the incidence of crimes and the security perception, possibly due to numerous reports of violence that, however, do not appear in official records. Therefore, this research indicates that crime occurrences are not related to the security perception around the campus.KeywordsSecurity perceptionCrime occurrencesOrdinary krigingSpatial analysisCampus management
