Abstract

A search for OH emission from luminous IRAS galaxies with the Parkes telescope has been completed. Two new megamasers were found out of 122 galaxies searched. The low success rate results from the relatively wide range in far-infrared colour temperatures and the corresponding low far-infrared luminosity of many of the selected candidates. Based on these and previous searches, the required conditions for OH megamaser emission are discussed, and the set of variables necessary to explain the observed correlations for megamasers is derived. New redshifts for 47 of the candidates were obtained with the 1.9-m and Stromlo telescope and the Anglo-Australian Telescope
