Abstract

AbstractA comprehensive method is outlined for the recovery of all bitumen binders used in road construction. The method has the advantage that the same apparatus and procedure can be employed for all binders, and it can be used for the recovery of cutback bitumen which has lost an unknown proportion of its flux oil.A filtered or centrifuged carbon disulphide solution of the binder to be recovered is distilled under standardised conditions. Last traces of solvent are removed under vacuum while a slow stream of carbon dioxide gas is passed through the liquid. The following precision limits have been established for the combined recovery and subsequent measurement of viscosity:.magnified image.
