Abstract
It is rarely that one has the opportunity of reading an autobiography at once so entertaining and so valuable as this of the late Colonel Bailey K. Ashford, of the United States Army Medical Corps. It is the story of a life-time spent in the service of his country and in striving to benefit man-kind. From the time that, as a young officer in the Medical Corps, he discovered the cause of the deadly anemia that was ravaging Puerto Rico to the day of his death, Bailey K. Ashford labored to increase our knowledge of tropical diseases and to alleviate some of the suffering that is caused by them. His contributions to our knowledge of these diseases and the success that attended his efforts to reduce their incidence in Puerto Rico will always remain as a memorial of the position he attained in scientific medicine.
