Abstract

Abstract This paper describes a computation method for the reduction of sun azimuth observations without having to use an almanac or other auxiliary tables. The process is considered in two stages, (1) the generation of the sun's declination, E (equation of time +12h) and the semi-diameter, and (2) the incorporation of these latter elements etc., into programmes for the reduction of sun azimuth observations. The Fourier technique of generating the major elements of a solar ephemeris on an annual basis, which has been derived in this investigation, has been tested on seven years of accurate data and the results indicate that the maximum error in declination and E should seldom exceed 1″ and 0S.08 respectively. The programmes for sun observation reduction, which have been written for a small desk top programmable calculator, have been tested by one state governmental and ten private survey organisations during 1975. Reports on these practical tests have shown that the method of computation described is high...
