Abstract
A source of pure Na-atom beams obtained under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) by reduction of sodium tungstates and molybdates with zirconium is described. An efficient miniaturised effusion source is utilised. The reaction products and the emission characteristics of the sodium source are studied in UHV using a static magnetic mass spectrometer. Comparison is made with other sources intended for the preparation of sodium layers in UHV.
