Abstract

Rape avoidance behaviors are burdensome and may prevent women from fully participating in society. In this study, we investigated links between sexual self-schemas and rape avoidance behavior among college women (N = 871), while controlling for relationship status and self-reported rape victimization. Rape avoidance behavior was not associated with relationship status or self-reported rape victimization but was associated with greater relationship exclusivity, sexual restraint, and emotional investment. Sexual self-schemas were associated with avoiding strange men, avoiding appearing sexually receptive, and avoiding being alone but not with awareness of surroundings/defensive preparedness. The results of this study suggest that women with sexual self-schemas that emphasize the importance of romance, loyalty, and abstinence may be assuming more of the burdensome behaviors of rape avoidance.
