Abstract

Socio-historical Approch to Yugoslavian immigration in France Jadranka ČAČIĆ-KUMPES and Josip KUMPES The long history of immigration to France by Yugoslavian workers (an estimated 100 000 people of Yugoslavian origin now live in France) is due to French immigration policy, as well as to the historical links between the two countries Franco-Serbian relations were particulary close. We can therefore assume that this is why the largest number of these emigres (in both absolute and relative terms) were of Serbian origin (not counting the autononous provinces). The variations in the size of the Yugoslavian population in France are linked to certain aspects of immigration and emigration policy (which itself depends on socio economic factors which may encourage or discourage immigration). Economic immigration has today evened itself out and the reuniting of families remains the principal cause of emigration. Living on the fringe of French society a growing number of Yugoslavs have decided to become naturalised French citizens, others have decided to return home. The majority is however undecided for the moment, torn between wanting to return to Yugoslavia and wanting, for numerous reasons, to prolong their stay.
