In 2007, the Energy Independence and Security Act helped jump start smart grid programs across the electric industry in the United States and promoted that industry's transition to incorporate advanced metering infrastructure (AMI). As is the case with any transformative technology, early adopters stumbled upon significant challenges unique to AMI programs, such as data analytics and system integration, but addressing these issues ultimately led to today's robust systems.
