Abstract

Manchester code + NRZ modulation is proposed for smooth PON evolution. The evolution allows a newly added PON to reuse the existing infrastructure and coexist with the current PON on a same wavelength, reducing the cost and saving the wavelength resource. The low-speed current PON signal and the high-speed new PON signal are in NRZ format and Manchester code, respectively. They are added in electrical domain and modulated on one optical carrier. At the reception, the NRZ signal is directly received by a low-speed receiver and the Manchester coded signal is recovered by half-bit-delayed subtraction. After the evolution, the new PON signal can be switched back to NRZ format to obtain 100% code efficiency. The evolution is repeatable. The proposed smooth evolution based on Manchester code + NRZ modulation is simulated demonstrated and the tested results verify the feasibility.
