Abstract
A smart structures concept is proposed in this note to enhance thebuckling load of columns. Unlike the earlier researchers who tried to enhancethe buckling load by increasing the mode of buckling, a new method is proposedhere to increase the buckling load by using the follower forces, which can beeasily applied by employing piezoelectric actuators. The concept isdemonstrated through an example of the buckling of an isotropic, uniformcantilever column with an end compressive concentrated load.
