Abstract

As the business of chemistry continues to transform itself in such areas as product development, mergers, and globalization, one facet of the industry should never change—science is the platform for who we are and what we do. In acknowledgment and in support of that principle, about two years ago the American Chemistry Council's board of directors approved two initiatives to expand the industry's investment in science. We did this in pursuit of our goal of better, healthier, and safer products. In October 1998, Vice President Al Gore, ACC, and Environmental Defense announced the HPV Chemical Challenge, a voluntary plan to increase the pace of screening tests conducted to determine potential health and environmental effects of high-production-volume chemicals. Since then, producers have volunteered more than 2,000 chemicals for health and environmental effects screening.
