Abstract

Several years ago the need for a thermoanalytical laboratory that provided services over a broad area was recognized at LLL. The objectives were to provide thermophysical and thermochemical data for a variety of unique problems. The quality of the data required vary with the needs of the requestor and the problem under investigation. The nature of the type of measurements is known to change with time and the services are therefore required to change also. The services provided by such a laboratory would include: Differential thermal analyses (DTA) of organic and inorganic systems over ranges of 4 to 2400 K. Thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) in the range from 300 to 1300 K. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) over a range from 150 to 500 K. Simultaneous differential thermal and thermogravimetric analyses of systems that decompose and mass spectroscopy of the decomposition products over a range from 300 to 1300 K.
