Abstract

This paper presents a reconfigurable patch antenna controlled by a thermal switch for temperature monitoring. A double-patch antenna is evolved from a simple patch antenna to satisfy the radio frequency identification (RFID) chip matching requirement. A slot and a thermal switch are incorporated into the antenna’s left patch to reconfigure the resonant frequency of the antenna according to the temperature of the surrounding environment. The measured read range of the antenna can reach up to 11 m, and the frequency deviation between switch on and off is 34 MHz. Furthermore, the antenna can also work well on metallic objects.
