Abstract
Slip-line fields are used to describe the three main interactions between abrasive grit and metal: ploughing, wedge formation and cutting. Combining these with ratchetting, or low-cycle fatigue models of mild wear, allows wear coefficients to be predicted from the mechanical properties of the metal and the profile of the abrasive. The predictions are verified by experiment, and are in accord with the values measured by other workers and the effects which they observed.
