Abstract
SYNOPSIS An intensive study of the site requirements of Pinus radiata yielded rather disappointing results for the prediction of site index (R2 = 0,47 Root MSE = 3,01m). This is ascribed to the adoption of a design dependent sampling strategy. Significant factors identified by the multiple regression analysis were complex, difficult to interpret and reflected regional gradients in soil texture, temperature and water-balance variables. Pinus radiata responds to a variety of environmental gradients in a complex fashion. The relatively poor performance of soil morphological and chemical factors in the prediction of site index was unexpected.
