Abstract

A novel single-layer cross polarization conversion (CPC) subwavelength element in this paper is presented for a broadband folded reflectarray antenna (FRA) design. The proposed element, which has a size of around one-quarter wavelength, has a very simple structure and consists of only double square ring resonators loaded with splits, thereby realizing easy fabrication with low cost. By scaling the size of the ring and mirroring the element, more than 360° phase change range is achieved at the center frequency, which is much greater than many reported sub-wavelength reflectarray elements. Besides, the simulated results show that the CPC efficiency is more than 90% over 15-23GHz for the normally incident wave. These characteristics make the proposed configuration unique, as most of the reported FRA elements rely on complex and multi-layer structures to realize the broadband CPC.
