Abstract

A variational method for computing approximate total quantum reaction probabilities from specific initial states is presented. This approach reduces the reactive scattering problem to a boundary value problem in the reactant arrangement without the use of complex absorbing boundaries. The method is tested by performing calculations on the three-dimensional H + H 2, D + H 2 and the H + D 2 reactions with J = 0.
