Abstract

A case is made for the study of knowledge from a psychological perspective, namely, as the process of knowing. A simulation model of psychological epistemology is presented which explicates the three basic epistemic styles of rationalism, empiricism, and metaphorism. As a test of plausibility, performance of the model is compared to that of subjects in a task involving the relational ordering of nonsense sentences. The implications of psychological epistemology to the behavioral study of the acquisition of knowledge is briefly discussed.
