Abstract

A simulation model has been developed to predict daily values of soil moisture content in the top 300 mm of the soil profile from simple meteorological and soil data. Daily precipitation is balanced against runoff, evapotranspiration and drainage. Proven procedures were adapted to calculate both runoff and evapotranspiration, the selection of the methods being influenced by the simplicity of the input data requirement and the essential accuracy of the results in relation to the complete model. Drainage for a given moisture content was calculated by means of exponential functions derived from experimental data of the hydraulic conductivities at field capacity and at saturation assuming a homogeneous soil profile. Good agreement was obtained between the predicted values of the soil moisture content and experimental data over a 4-year period for three typical Scottish soils both fallow and grass covered.
