Abstract
A method is described for the formation of 3,5-dinitrobenzoate esters of alcohols at low levels in aqueous solutions. A one-phase system using an acetonitrile-based solvent system is reported in which both reactants and products form a homogeneous solution. Problems associated with hydrolysis of the derivatization reagent are reduced by drying all samples and reagants with molecular sieves. Direct injection is made upon completion of reaction, thereby eliminating tedious washings and extractions. High pressure liquid chromatograms are presented and potential problems are discussed.
