Abstract
The Brazier effect in cylindrical tubes under pure plastic bending is investigated. A simple theoretical model is proposed to predict the bending moment and section deformation in terms of curvature, material properties and geometric parameters of a tube made of a perfectly plastic and strain-hardened material. A postulate of a minimum instantaneous bending moment is used to determine the degree of ovalization. The analytical solution compares well with the results of numerical calculations taken from ABAQUS 4–6 Example Manual.
