Abstract

A technique using large portable field cages is described as a practical method of evaluating efficacy potential of chemical bird repellents on maturing field corn. Several advantages of this technique over conventional “open-field type” efficacy evaluations are described—all relating to greater control of possible test variables. 4 methythio-3,5-xylyl N-methylcarbamate (mesurol) showed significant repellency (p < 0.05) in all tests completed using an application rate of 2 kg/acre. A comparison of results using two types of sample vectors indicated that efficacy of the repellent tested was highest prior to the onset of bird damage, possibly due to the presence of the repellent in accessible water. Once bird damage occurred, the efficacy of the product was reduced considerably. The simplicity and versatility of the technique suggests its potential application for efficacy evaluation involving other products, bird species, and agricultural crops.
