Abstract

In the past, residential energy analysis techniques such as the Los Alamos Solar Load Ratio (SLR) method have had to use very simplistic analysis of the heat load of the earth contact portion of residential structures. These equations, such as those recommended in Volume II of the Passive Solar Handbook are inappropriate for determination of heat loads below grade. A better technique is desirable since performance of the solar element is strongly tied to building thermal load.
