Abstract

This paper presents some simplified expressions for the four components of bistatic radar reflectivity (i.e., bistatic scattering cross section per unit rain volume), which are based on the Mie scattering theory for spherical drops and the Marshall‐Palmer raindrop size distribution, and can be used at least in the frequency range from 10 to 30 GHz, at an average temperature of 10°C. The coefficients of these simplified expressions are then fitted in frequency by polynomial expansions which make it possible to extrapolate their values, with a good precision, at any frequency in the 10–30 GHz range. A check of the variability of reflectivity components with temperature has also been performed; variations appear to be less than 1 dB for temperature differences ranging from 10°C to 20°C.
