Abstract

We present a new, simple and efficient interferometric method for the measurement of the beat length of optical fiber with stress-induced linear birefringence. The proposed measurement method offers the unique advantage of being an all-fiber system, which simply consists of a broadband source, a circulator, a polarization-maintaining (PM) fiber coupler, a piece of PM fiber under test to form the Sagnac loop and an optical spectrum analyser. Experimental results are given to show the effectiveness of the method.
