Abstract

This paper presents a simple and novel active reconfigurable frequency selective surface (FSS) layer for antenna beam steering applications. The FSS layer is made up of two unit cells arranged adjacent to each other. Each FSS unit cell consist of a discontinuous metallic square-ring incorporated with PIN diodes. By controlling the states of the PIN diodes, the FSS layer can transmit or reflect the impinging electromagnetic waves. To verify the feasibility of the proposed FSS for beam steering, a monopole rod antenna is designed with the proposed FSS incorporated. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed FSS structure can achieve beam steering for different boresight beam directions.
