Abstract

We introduce a short procedure for solving single level lot sizing problems. It does not require extensive training to understand the procedure, and is so simple that it can be done on the “back of an envelope”. Even under “hard” test conditions it results in inventory costs that average only 0.70% higher than optimal. The procedure can also be used as a conceptual “building block” for explaining multi-level lot sizing problems.
