Abstract

Based on the microscopic structure of the low-energy octupole excitations, a simple but efficient parametrization for the energies of 3 1 − states in all (non-doubly magic) nuclei with A ⩾30 is introduced. The mass and total valence nucleon number dependence of these energies is pointed out and related to general shell structure aspects. A simple analytic formula is developed that, with a few well defined exceptions, fits the 3 1 − energies very well. Anomalous behaviour is therefore highlighted and its origins can often be identified.
