Abstract

The requirements of a racing car are different from that of an ordinary car. Racing cars need to have very high acceleration and the maximum speed is much greater than that of the conventional vehicles. Further, timing being of acute importance the design of the exact gear ratio plays a crucial role. The hybrid vehicles are those which make use of more than one source of energy. In this paper we consider a hybrid system consisting of IC engine and electric motor. The optimal gear ratio is designed so that the formula car runs as an electric vehicle. The design is extended to include the IC engine and the parallel hybrid system is simulated to test for the performance characteristics of the vehicle. The complete design of the gear ratio is based on fundamental laws of physics and hence simplicity is at the core of the design.
