Abstract

Planetary boundary layer data taken from a package suspended from a tethered balloon during the Aidjex 1972 pilot experiment indicated the frequent presence of an adiabatic layer with uniform velocity topped by an inversion. A simplified von Karman momentum integral is developed to calculate a drag coefficient with respect to surface velocity, geostrophic velocity, and inversion height for these rather special cases.
