Abstract

RM-solvent composition relationships were investigated for pyridine, quinoline and aniline derivatives with two groups capable of adsorption on silica. Linear RM(log XS) relationships were obtained in wide composition ranges, the slope of the lines informing about the mechanism of adsorption. Conditions for two-point adsorption of the solutes were formulated, the following parameters being discussed: adsorption energies of the two groups, elution strength of the polar solvent, molecular structure of the solute. For donor-acceptor solutes some indications of solvation effects in the solution phase were observed. Practical conclusions concerning the selectivity of TLC separations of solutes possessing two functional groups are given.
