Abstract

A simple model is used to discuss excitons of arbitrary binding and localisation. It consists of two one-dimensional tight-binding bands, one being the full valence band and the other the empty conduction band. In addition, there are on-site electron-hole and nearest-neighbour dipole-dipole interaction terms in the Hamiltonian. Explicit expressions for the exciton band and wavefunction are derived. These reduce to the Frenkel and Wannier exciton, respectively, in the appropriate limits.
