Abstract
Abstract : The solvation of monoatomic ions at infinite dilution in polar solvents is considered within the context of the mean spherical approximation (MSA). The role of both ion-dipole and dipole-dipole interactions in determining the Gibbs energy and entropy of solvation is considered in detail for the alkali metal and halide ions in water. The significance of the MSA parameters with respect to local interactions of water molecules with the ions and each other is discussed.
