Abstract

Current methods for the interaction of first-year ridges with platforms usually calculate the load from the consolidated layer and the keel separately and then add them. This paper describes a new approach for sloping structures. The ridge is assumed to be a composite beam having an upper layer with modulus and strength properties based on solid ice and a lower layer with modulus and strength based on the keel being weak porous solid ice. The paper presents the theory and results which suggest lower ice loads than estimated by the conventional approach.
