Abstract

The approximate quantum yield for the photodimerization of trans-cinnamic acid in the solid state (in the crystalline filmy state) was measured by a simple procedure using a merry-go-round apparatus. The observed quantum yield for α-truxillic acid was 0.59. The simultaneous formation of a small amount of cis-cinnamic acid was observed, indicating the presence of defects in the irradiated crystalline film. These defects appear to be present along the surface of the Pyrex reaction vessel.
