Abstract

This article describes a simple technique for measuring the energy of an accelerator electron beam, using the formation of dendroid cracks in a clear dielectric under the effect of a charged particle beam. A typical discharge track pattern in a sample of clear acrylic measuring 50 x 140 x 200 mm is shown. The energy of an accelerated electron beam can be measured by the following simple procedure: a sample of clear acrylic is placed in the beam; the sample is exposed until a discharge occurs; the distance between the beam entrance plane and the far edge of the discharge tracks is measured; the energy is then determined from a chart provided in this article.
