Abstract

Inability to determine the absolute sensitivity of acoustic emission transducing systems has long presented a problem for workers in this field. A simple, low cost method is described for the measurement of absolute signal to noise ratio in response to white noise excitation energy as produced by a jet of helium gas. This method facilitates the direct comparison of system sensitivity, in the range 0–1.0 MHz, regardless of the type of signal conditioning used.
