Abstract

It is shown that the occurrence of offsets of various orientations along the contacts of an intrusive sheet permits the rapid establishment of the net dilation direction for the sheet. The application of the method to some dykes on Arran shows that oblique opening of a fissure was sometimes accompanied by a vertical component of opening. The technique provides a tool for the analysis of patterns of crustal displacement associated with dyke intrusion.
