Abstract

Instagel was found to be able to dissolve a neutralized tissue hydrolysate made by strong alkaline digestion at high temperatures without the use of a solubilizer. Tritium could be counted without any important quench problems, without phase separation or chemiluminescence, with an efficiency of approximately 35%. No selfabsorption problems were encountered and the quench curve from a commercial standard set was perfectly usable. The absolute counting efficiency could not be evaluated directly in the practical experiments with tissue labelling, but an indirect evaluation suggests that the method is employable and that the counting efficiency for tritium must be several times greater than that previously seen with alkaline digestion of tissue.
