Abstract

In this instrument, the echoes are added to a continuous wave having a frequency 1.5 times that of the echoes. Changes in ultrasonic velocity result in a change of the added waveform. The relative velocity changes are given by the relative frequency changes required to restore the waveform. A relative accuracy of 2 parts in 106 can be easily achieved. This is an order of a magnitude better than the resolution of the pulse-echo overlap method.
