Abstract

An axial tension (compression) increases (decreases) the natural frequency of transverse vibration of a beam. The primary objective of the present work is to demonstrate this effect using a universal testing machine, an impact hammer, an accelerometer, an oscilloscope with spectrum facility and a mild steel specimen of circular cross-section. The above equipments are among the essential facilities available in a typical material testing and vibration laboratory. Therefore the proposed experimentation demands no special specific set-up and can be performed at no extra cost.
