Abstract

A hybrid scheme of conventional downlink beamforming and open loop transmit diversity using a dual polarized antenna array is studied. The performance of the proposed scheme is determined based on simple theoretical considerations. The scheme is found to provide a significant gain over conventional beamforming with the same complexity. It is furthermore shown that the scheme is applicable within the limitations of the UMTS specifications.
