Abstract

A simple method for detecting patients' antibodies to the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) is described. LPS was prepared from a panel of VTEC serotypes by the digestion of whole bacteria with proteinase-K, preparations were `dotted' onto strips of nitrocellulose and reacted with sera from patients with haemolytic uraemic syndrome. The use of whole-cell LPS in the form of strips of stable VTEC antigens, provides a rapid procedure for diagnosing infection with VTEC belonging to any serogroup.
