Abstract

In recent cold fusion experiments, the multiplicity spectrum of neutron counts registered in a short counting interval has been measured using a PC-based data acquisition system to establish whether neutrons are produced singly or in sharp cascades or bunches. This is important for understanding the mechanism responsible for neutron production in cold fusion experiments. In this paper a simple dead time technique is proposed for measuring the fraction of neutrons which are emitted in bunches. The method is an adaptation of similar techniques used in the fields of reactor noise analysis and non-destructive estimation of Pu for safeguards applications.
