Abstract

A small, inexpensive cannula, easily made from a straight piece of 27 gauge stainless steel or platinum-irridium tubing2 and the receptacle from a no. 1/0 rustproof fabric snap fastener,3 had proven to be satisfactory for chronic implantation into the hen’s brain.To make the cannula, the receptacle is aligned in a small vise with the well formed by the underside of the mating cap up and the base of the 4-holed rim horizontal. A 1/32″ (0.7 mm.) hole is drilled through the bottom of the well. A piece of tubing of the desired length, held in the electrode carrier of a stereotaxic instrument, is lowered into the well, in a plane vertical to the receptacle base, until 3 mm. of the tip extends through the bottom of the drill hole.
